Definition and characteristics of survey research

For those who are struggling with the final project, of course, they will be faced with a research method or design that will be used as a tool to dissect the problem under study. The selection of this research method or design must be done from the beginning because it becomes the door for the next steps. One of the research designs or methods that is often used is survey research. Usually, survey research uses a questionnaire as a data collection tool.

A. Understanding

Etymologically, the word survey comes from Latin which consists of the word sur which means above or beyond and the word videre which means to see. Thus, survey means to look above or beyond.

The definition of survey research according to experts is as follows.

  1. Nan Lin in Gulo (2002) defines a survey as a method of collecting data by using an instrument to request responses from respondents about the sample.
  2. Kerlinger in Sugiyono (2007) defines survey research as research conducted on large or small populations, but the data studied are data from samples taken from that population, so that relative events, distributions, and relationships between sociological variables are found. psychological.
  3. Priyono (2008) defines survey research as research that uses a questionnaire as a research instrument. He further explained that the questionnaire is a sheet containing several questions with a standard structure. In conducting the survey, the research conditions were not manipulated by the researcher.
  4. Sandu Siyoto and M. Ali Sodik (2015) define survey research as a quantitative research to examine the behavior of an individual or group. In general, survey research uses a questionnaire as a data collection tool.

B. Characteristics of Survey Research

Survey research has special characteristics, namely as follows.

  • Survey research is usually used on a representative sample of the population.
  • Involves many respondents.
  • Covers a large area.
  • Conclusions are drawn from the sample.
  • Responses or responses of respondents can be known directly.
  • Executed in a natural situation.
